Fourth-ranked Leeuwarden (15-13) gave a tough game to third ranked Groningen (19-9) on Tuesday. Groningen managed to secure only three-point victory 90-87. However their fans expected easier game. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Leeuwarden. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 20-13. But Leeuwarden won second period 26-25. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Groningen won last quarter 25-23. Groningen outrebounded Leeuwarden 45-33 including 18 on the offensive glass. 24 personal fouls committed by Leeuwarden helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Americans were the main players on the court. Guard Nate Rohnert (197-87, college: Denver) scored 18 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists to lead the charge for the winners and forward Jamal Boykin (203-87, college: California) chipped in 19 points and 7 rebounds during the contest. Groningen's coach Ivica Skelin used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. Forward Samme Givens (195, college: Drexel) responded with a double-double by scoring 18 points and 10 rebounds and David Michaels (201-90, college: Whitman, agency: Pro One Sports) scored 18 points and 5 rebounds (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line). Four Leeuwarden players scored in double figures. Groningen have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain third position with 19-9 record having three points less than leader Den Bosch. Leeuwarden at the other side dropped to the fifth place with 13 games lost. Groningen are looking forward to face Weert (#8) on the road in the next round where they are favorite. Leeuwarden will play against Zwolle and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
