Regular Season Round 18: Toyota Alvark - Aishin SH 63-66
Date: March 2, 2013
The game had a very big importance for first-ranked Aishin Sea Horses as it allowed them to take a leadership position after previous leader's (Aishin Sea Horses) loss. Aishin Sea Horses edged second-best Toyota Alvark in Tokyo 66-63. It was a key game for the top position in the league. It looked good early as Toyota Alvark took an 6-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Aishin Sea Horses had a 18-7 second period charge getting the lead and Toyota Alvark was not able to take back game control losing it eventually 63-66. Aishin Sea Horses dominated on the defensive end, holding Toyota Alvark to just 7 points in second quarter. They brought some defensive toughness making 7 blocks. Toyota Alvark was plagued by 26 personal fouls down the stretch. The former international power forward J.R. Sakuragi (206-76, college: UCLA) notched a double-double by scoring 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead the effort and international swingman Takatoshi Furukawa (190-87) supported him with 11 points. Even a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds by American forward Jeff Gibbs (188-80, college: Otterbein) did not help to save the game for Toyota Alvark. His fellow American import forward Philip Ricci (202-80, college: Oregon St.) added 12 points and 5 rebounds. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. As mentioned above they are at the top of the standings which they share with defeated Toyota Alvark. Toyota Alvark will play next round against strong Toshiba Thunders trying to get back on the winning streak. Aishin Sea Horses will try to continue on its current victory against sixth ranked Tochigi Brex at home.
