Regular Season Round 20: Hitachi SR - Toyota Alvark 68-81
Date: March 15, 2013
Another interesting game was a derby match between two local teams from Tokyo: Toyota Alvark (#2) and Hitachi Sunrockers (#5). Hitachi Sunrockers were defeated at home 68-81 and even the fact of playing on their own court did not help. The game was mostly controlled by Toyota Alvark. Hitachi Sunrockers managed to win fourth quarter 12-11. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded Hitachi Sunrockers 37-25 including 22 on the defensive glass. Toyota Alvark shot the lights out from three sinking 14 long-distance shots on high 53.8 percentage. The winners were led by the former international guard Yusuke Okada (185-84) who scored that evening 25 points and American forward Jeff Gibbs (188-80, college: Otterbein) supported him with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Even a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds by American center Darren Fenn (208-80, college: Canisius, agency: Three Eye Sports) did not help to save the game for Hitachi Sunrockers. International power forward Joji Takeuchi (207-85, agency: N.E.T.) added 11 points for the hosts. Four Hitachi Sunrockers players scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Defending champion maintains second position with 30-10 record having just two points less than leader Aishin SH. Loser Hitachi Sunrockers dropped to the fourth place with 18 games lost. Toyota Alvark will meet at home bottom-ranked Hokkaido L. (#8) in the next round where they are favorite. Hitachi Sunrockers will play against Toshiba Thunders (#3) in Kanagawa and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
