Regular Season Round 23: Acea Virtus RM - Umana VE 74-69
Date: March 17, 2013
Very expected game when 8th ranked Umana Venezia (11-12) was defeated on the road by third ranked Lottomatica Roma (16-7) 74-69 on Sunday. However just five-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. The hosts trailed by 8 points after first quarter, but they rallied back winning two of next three quarters and won the game by 5 points. Lottomatica Roma dominated on the defensive end, holding Umana Venezia to just 7 points in second quarter. Lottomatica Roma forced 19 Umana Venezia turnovers. It was a great evening for American-Nigerian power forward Gani Lawal (205-88, college: Georgia Tech) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 22 points and 11 rebounds (on 9-of-10 shooting from the field). International forward Luigi Datome (203-87) helped adding 17 points and 5 rebounds. The former international guard Guido Rosselli (198-83) responded with 8 points, 9 rebounds and 9 assists and Polish center Szymon Szewczyk (209-82) scored 18 points and 6 rebounds. Umana Venezia's coach gave the chance to play for ten players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Lottomatica Roma have a solid series of four victories in a row. They maintain third place with 16-7 record having just two points less than leader Banco di Sard. Umana Venezia lost third consecutive game. They keep the eighth position with 12 games lost. Lottomatica Roma will face Oknoplast BO (#13) in Bologna in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Umana Venezia will play at home against Angelico Biella (#16).
