Important game to mention about took place in Sao Paolo. Fifth ranked Pinheiros (21-10) saved a 3-point victory at home edging second-ranked Brasilia (26-5) 92-89 on Thursday evening. It looked good early as Brasilia took an 2-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Pinheiros had a 32-20 second period charge getting the lead and Brasilia was not able to take back game control losing it eventually 89-92. Pinheiros made 22-of-28 charity shots (78.6 percent) during the game. Brasilia was plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. It was an exceptional evening for American Joe Smith (192-77, college: Al.-Huntsville) who led the winners and scored 26 points and 5 assists. The former international power forward Mineiro Ferreira (208-88) accounted for 20 points and 7 rebounds for the winning side. International forward Guilherme Giovannoni (203-80, agency: Interperformances) came up with 21 points and 6 assists and international guard Alex Ribeiro (191-80, agency: Interperformances) added 16 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists respectively for Brasilia in the defeat. Five Pinheiros and four Brasilia players scored in double figures. Pinheiros have an impressive series of five victories in a row. They maintain fifth place with 21-10 record. Defending champion Brasilia keeps the second position with five games lost. Pinheiros will play against league's leader Flamengo in Rio de Janeiro in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Brasilia will play on the road against Sao Jose/Vinac and hopes to get back on the winning track.
