Date: April 4, 2013
Seventh-ranked Paulistano (16-17) gave a tough game to first ranked Flamengo (28-3) in Sao Paolo on Thursday. The visitors from Rio de Janeiro managed to secure only one-point victory 94-93. However their fans expected much easier game. The guests trailed by 11 points after three quarters before their 29-17 charge, which allowed them to win the game. It was a great shooting night for Flamengo especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 64.3 percentage. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Flamengo made 10 blocks. 25 personal fouls committed by Paulistano helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. It was a great evening for the former international Marquinhos Vieira (207-84) who led his team to a victory scoring 27 points and 5 assists. Ghanian point guard Kojo Mensah (185-85, college: Duquesne, agency: Interperformances) helped adding 15 points and 5 assists. The former international guard Andre Luiz Brugger (192-81) responded with 22 points and forward Alex Oliveira (194-83) scored 17 points. Both teams had five players each who scored in double figures. Paulistano's coach Gustavo Conti rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Flamengo have a solid series of four victories in a row. They maintain first place with 28-3 record. Paulistano at the other side keeps the seventh position with 17 games lost. Flamengo are looking forward to face Pinheiros (#5) in Sao Paolo in the next round.
