Regular Season Round 5: Aomori Watts - Niigata Albirex 80-66

There was a minor upset when higher ranked Niigata Albirex (2-3) was defeated on the road by tenth ranked Aomori Watts (2-3) 80-66 on Saturday. The game was mostly controlled by Aomori Watts. Niigata Albirex was better in third quarter 16-14. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded Niigata Albirex 36-25 including a 28-15 advantage in defensive rebounds. American guard Eric May (196-90, college: Iowa) stepped up and scored 16 points and 6 assists (perfect from the field making all six shots) for the winners and Guyanese-American forward Gordon Klaiber (206-83, college: Fair Dickinson) chipped in 19 points and 5 rebounds. Aomori Watts' coach Shiko Kotobuki used a ten-player rotation and allowed the starting five to get some rest. American center Patrick Sullivan (206-88, college: SE Louisiana) responded with 18 points and 5 rebounds and the other American import forward Rodney Webb (200-83, college: Florida Atlantic) produced a double-double by scoring 14 points and 10 rebounds. Four Niigata Albirex players scored in double figures. Aomori Watts moved-up to fifth place, which they share with 5 other teams including defeated Niigata Albirex. Niigata Albirex lost their third game in a row. Aomori Watts will face again Niigata Albirex (#6) at home in the next round.
