Regular Season Round 8: Pioneros - Panteras 85-76

LNBP top team - Pioneros (6-0) managed to deliver another win. This time they beat seventh ranked Panteras (3-4) in Cancun 85-76. It looked good early as Panteras took an 5-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Pioneros had a 23-11 second period charge getting the lead and Panteras were not able to take back game control losing it eventually 76-85. Pioneros made 22-of-26 charity shots (84.6 percent) during the game. They also forced 19 Panteras turnovers. Panteras were plagued by 24 personal fouls down the stretch. The winners were led by the former international forward Hector Hernandez (206-85, college: Fresno St.) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 20 points and 11 rebounds and American-Puerto Rican point guard Denis Clemente (183-86, college: Kansas St.) supported him with 15 points and 6 assists. Five Pioneros players scored in double figures. Even 35 points (!!!) by Puerto Rican swingman Alejandro Carmona (194-83) did not help to save the game for Panteras. Panamanian power forward Antonio Garcia (203-76, college: Ky Wesleyan) added 9 points, 19 rebounds and 7 assists for the guests. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Pioneros have an impressive six-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 6-0 record. Panteras at the other side dropped to the eighth place with four games lost. Pioneros will play against Toros (#4) in Nuevo Laredo in the next round. Panteras will play at home against Huracanes (#7) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
