Regular Season Round 5: Toyama Grouses - Sendai 89ers 88-79

Everything went according to plan when leader Toyama Grouses (3-0) beat at home 5th ranked Sendai 89ers (2-3) 88-79 on Saturday. Sendai 89ers were tied after three quarters but could not keep up in the last quarter eventually losing the game. Toyama Grouses dominated down low during the game scoring 56 of its points in the paint compared to Sendai 89ers' 32. They outrebounded Sendai 89ers 51-36 including 19 on the offensive glass. Sendai 89ers were plagued by 29 personal fouls down the stretch. American forward Ira Brown (193-82, college: Gonzaga) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 24 points and 18 rebounds for the winners and Joho Masashi (183-82) chipped in 21 points and 5 rebounds. Four Toyama Grouses players scored in double figures. American guard Wendell Wendell (198-84, college: UNLV) responded with 28 points and 8 rebounds and the other American import Travele Travel (203-88, college: Texas Southern) scored 15 points and 8 rebounds. Sendai 89ers' coach Shuto Kawachi rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. The victory was the third consecutive win for Toyama Grouses. They moved-up to second place, which they share with Osaka Evessa and Kyoto Hannar. Loser Sendai 89ers keep the fifth position with three games lost. Toyama Grouses will face again Sendai 89ers (#8) at home in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game.
