Regular Season Round 8: Malbas - Hoganas 74-64

Round 8 in Basketettan means a new league leader. The biggest surprise took place in Malmo where host Malbas (5-0) beat league's leader Hoganas (4-1) 74-64 on Sunday evening. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Hoganas. It was a key game for the top position in the league. The game was mostly controlled by Malbas. Hoganas managed to win third quarter 27-14. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Malbas forced 19 Hoganas turnovers. The best player for the winners was Australian guard John Fitzgerald (193-84, college: Lindsey Wilson) who scored 17 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 6 steals. Power forward Alexander Nilsson (209-90) chipped in 8 points and 12 rebounds. Malbas' coach Henrik Svensson used an eleven-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Lithuanian point guard Laimonas Kutra (185-88) produced 13 points and 7 rebounds and Lithuanian forward Nerijus Strazdauskas (198-84) added 16 points and 5 rebounds respectively for the guests. Four Hoganas players scored in double figures. Malbas have an impressive five-game winning streak. They keep a position of league leader. Hoganas at the other side dropped to the second place with one game lost. They share the position with IK Eos. Hoganas will play next round against strong Trelleborg trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Malbas will try to continue on its current victory against ninth ranked Brahe Basket in Huskvarna.
