Regular Season Round 1: Regina - UBC 78-72

The most crucial game of the last round was a loss of Thunderbirds (0-1) in Regina, SK on Friday night. Visitors were defeated by Cougars (1-0) 78-72. The hosts started the game with a very strong first quarter 22-13. But Thunderbirds won second period 21-19. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Cougars forced 24 Thunderbirds turnovers. Strangely Thunderbirds outrebounded Cougars 50-29 including a 16-5 advantage in offensive rebounds. Point guard Brendan Hebert (180) nailed 23 points and 7 assists for the winning side and Brandon Tull accounted for 14 points and 7 rebounds. Four Cougars players scored in double figures. Cougars' coach used entire bench and allowed the starting five to rest. Forward Tommy Nixon (198) came up with 21 points and 8 rebounds and forward Harpreet Randhawa (201) added 7 points and 11 rebounds respectively for Thunderbirds in the defeat. Cougars will meet at home Vikies (#4) in the next round. Thunderbirds will play against Bobcats in Brandon, MB and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
