Regular Season Round 2: Al Shamal - Al Rayyan 70-101

Another interesting game was also this time a derby match between local teams from Doha: Al Rayyan (#1) and Al Shamal (#9). Al Shamal was smashed at home by 31 points 70-101. The game was mostly controlled by Al Rayyan. Al Shamal was better in fourth quarter 25-18. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Al Rayyan dominated down low during the game scoring 68 of its points in the paint compared to Al Shamal's 36. They outrebounded Al Shamal 47-28 including a 36-23 advantage in defensive rebounds. Al Rayyan looked well-organized offensively handing out 29 assists comparing to just 14 passes made by Al Shamal's players. American point guard Boney Watson (183-78, college: Sam Houston St.) had a double-double by scoring 22 points, 7 rebounds and 10 assists to lead the charge for the winners and Croatian center Jurica Zuza (207-78, agency: Alti Sport) chipped in 23 points and 7 rebounds (perfect from the field making all ten shots !!!) during the contest. Watson is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Coach Brian Rowsom's team controlled all game and the coach could let to play 11 players and allowed the starting five to rest. American power forward Jonathan Huffman (213-86, college: Iona, agency: Gamble Sports Management) responded with 22 points and 6 rebounds and American-Jamaican guard Brian McKenzie (193-88, college: Providence) scored 14 points and 7 rebounds. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Al Rayyan's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Doha Al Gharafa.
