Not a big story in a game in Rishon Le-Zion where 12th ranked Maccabi Rishon (1-5) was defeated by second ranked Maccabi Haifa (4-1) 87-72 on Sunday. The game was mostly controlled by Maccabi Haifa. Maccabi Rishon managed to win second period 17-13. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded Maccabi Rishon 38-26 including 28 on the defensive glass. The best player for the winners was American-Venezuelan Donta Smith (200-83, college: SE Illinois JC) who had a double-double by scoring 17 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists. American forward Brian Randle (203-85) chipped in 20 points and 8 rebounds. Four Maccabi Haifa players scored in double figures. Maccabi Haifa's coach Danny Franco used an eleven-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. At the other side the best for losing team was American point guard Bryan Hopkins (183-83, college: SMU) who recorded 22 points and his fellow American import forward Tasmin Mitchell (201-86, college: LSU) added 13 points and 6 rebounds respectively. Maccabi Haifa have a solid four-game winning streak. Defending champion keeps a position of league leader, which they share with Ironi Nes-Ziona. Maccabi Rishon lost fifth consecutive game. They stay at the bottom place with five games lost. Maccabi Haifa will meet at home Hapoel Holon (#4) in the next round. Maccabi Rishon will play against Maccabi Ashdod (#11) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
