Regular Season Round 6: Valur - Thor Thorl 97-89

Valur has finally registered their first victory this season after five consecutive loses. The win is especially important as they defeated much higher ranked Thor Thorl (3-3) 97-89. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 23-21. But Thor Thorl won second period 26-25. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Valur dominated down low during the game scoring 66 of its points in the paint compared to Thor Thorl's 46. They outrebounded Thor Thorl 67-35 including a 35-8 advantage in offensive rebounds. Valur players were unselfish on offense dishing 23 assists. American forward Chris Woods (195-89, college: Pfeiffer) notched a double-double by scoring 30 points, 24 rebounds and 5 assists to lead the effort and center Birgir Petursson (205-86) supported him with 23 points, 25 rebounds and 4 assists. Even 32 points and 7 rebounds by American swingman Mike Cook (193-84, college: Pittsburgh) did not help to save the game for Thor Thorl. point guard Baldur Ragnarsson (182-90) added 16 points and 6 assists. Four Thor Thorl players scored in double figures. Valur (1-5) left bottom position moving up to tenth place. It was Thor Thorl's third loss in a row. They dropped to the sixth position with three games lost. They share it with Snaefell. Valur will play against higher ranked Snaefell (#7) in Stykkisholmur in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Thor Thorl will play at home against Skallagrimur and hopes to get back on the winning track.
