Regular Season Round 5: Al Khor - Al Rayyan 65-66

The most exciting game of round 5 in the D1 took place in Al Khor. This derby game ended with only one-point home defeat of 6th ranked Al Khor (5-4) to leader Al Rayyan (9-0) 66-65 on Sunday evening. Guest team only slightly avoided a big embarassment. Al Rayyan dominated down low during the game scoring 50 of its points in the paint compared to Al Khor's 30. They outrebounded Al Khor 45-28 including 16 on the offensive glass. The best player for the winners was the former international forward Tanguy Ngombo (197-84) who had a double-double by scoring 21 points and 10 rebounds. American point guard Boney Watson (183-78, college: Sam Houston St.) chipped in 17 points and 5 rebounds. Watson is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Senegalese forward Moustapha Niang (206-83) produced 25 points and 6 rebounds and American guard Jamarr Hardy (191-83, college: Lenoir CC) added 15 points, 8 rebounds and 9 assists respectively for the hosts. Four Al Khor players scored in double figures. Al Rayyan have an impressive series of nine victories in a row. Defending champion maintains first place with 9-0 record. Newly promoted Al Khor dropped to the fifth position with four games lost. They share it with Al Jaysh. Al Rayyan's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Doha Qatar Sports Club.
