Regular Season Round 6: Brunell - UL Huskies 75-85

The most crucial game of the last round was the first loss of undefeated Brunell (4-1) in Cork on Sunday night. Hosts were defeated by UL Huskies (5-0) 85-75. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Brunell. It was a key game for the top position in the league as both teams had the same 4-0 record before this meeting. UL Huskies well out of reach of Brunell shooting 70.8 percent from the field and made 17-of-21 free shots (81.0 percent) during the game. UL Huskies forced 20 Brunell turnovers and outrebounded them 48-26 including a 32-16 advantage in defensive rebounds. The best player for the winners was the former international guard Rachel Clancy (175-88, college: Cal Poly - SLO) who scored 23 points and 7 rebounds (on 10-of-13 shooting from the field). Canadian-British guard Rachel Vanderwal (176-83, college: Boston U., agency: Bluestar Sports Management) chipped in a double-double by scoring 17 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists. At the other side the best for losing team was Edel Thornton who recorded 25 points and power forward Amy Waters added 11 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 blocks respectively. Five UL Huskies and four Brunell players scored in double figures. UL Huskies have an impressive five-game winning streak. Defending champion keeps a position of league leader. Brunell at the other side dropped to the third place with one game lost. They share the position with DCU Mercy. UL Huskies will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Brunell will play on the road against DCU Mercy in Dublin and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
