Regular Season Round 9: Trefl II Sopot - AZS UMK Torun 65-60

There was a minor upset when 6th ranked AZS UMK Torun (4-5) was defeated on the road by eighth ranked Trefl II Sopot (4-4) 65-60 on Saturday. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But AZS UMK Torun won third quarter 16-12. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Trefl II Sopot won last quarter 20-17. Grzegorz Kulka (203-96) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 15 points and 10 rebounds (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field) for the winners and forward Cyprian Zieba (200-94) chipped in 18 points. The best for the losing side was forward Tomasz Lipinski (201-78) with 18 points and 8 rebounds and forward Slawomir Murowicki (194-83) scored 10 points. Four AZS UMK Torun players scored in double figures. AZS UMK Torun's coach Maciej Deregowski tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Trefl II Sopot moved-up to sixth place in Group A. Newly promoted AZS UMK Torun dropped to the seventh position with five games lost. Trefl II Sopot will face higher ranked Polonia W-wa (#5) in Warszawa in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. AZS UMK Torun will play at home against the league's second-placed Legia and hope to win that game.
