Regular Season Round 8: Panathinaikos - AE Ellinikou 64-61

Date: December 7, 2013
There was a change at the A1 leadership position after last games. Round 8 most important game was a defeat of league's leader AE Ellinikou (7-1). They were edged by third ranked Panathinaikos (7-1) 64-61 on Saturday night. It ended at the same time the eight-game winning streak of AE Ellinikou. It was a key game for the top position in the league. The hosts trailed by 9 points after three quarters before their 21-9 charge, which allowed them to win the game. It was a great shooting night for Panathinaikos especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 57.1 percentage. Worth to mention a great performance of American power forward Diana Delva (188-88, college: Hartford) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 13 points and 13 rebounds and international guard Dimitra Kalentzou (174-78) who added 14 points, 8 assists and 4 steals during the contest. Four Panathinaikos players scored in double figures. The former international forward Anna Spyridopoulou (184-88) responded with 8 points and 9 rebounds and the former international forward Evina Stamati (181-84) scored 14 points. AE Ellinikou's coach Eleni Kapogianni rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Defending champion keeps a position of league leader, which they share with Proteas and AE Ellinikou. AE Ellinikou will play next round against league's leader Proteas trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Panathinaikos will try to continue on its current victory against fifth ranked Athinaikos. It will be extra interesting game as Athinaikos is their local rival from Athens.
