Regular Season Round 22: Toyota Alvark - Aishin SH 76-78

Second-ranked Toyota Alvark (17-8) gave a tough game to first ranked Aishin Sea Horses (24-1) in Tokyo on Friday. The visitors from Kariya managed to secure only two-point victory 78-76. However their fans expected easier game. The guests trailed by 3 points at the halftime before their 27-18 charge in the third quarter, which allowed them to win the game. Aishin Sea Horses dominated down low during the game scoring 54 of its points in the paint compared to Toyota Alvark's 34. The former international center J.R. Sakuragi (206-76, college: UCLA) had a double-double by scoring 16 points and 13 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and international swingman Kosuke Kanamaru (193-89) chipped in 21 points during the contest. Aishin Sea Horses' coach Kimikazu Suzuki used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. At the losing side American forward Jeff Gibbs (188-80, college: Otterbein) responded with a double-double by scoring 14 points, 11 rebounds and 5 blocks and the former international forward Michael Takahashi (198-74, college: CS Northridge) scored 13 points and 7 rebounds. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Aishin Sea Horses have an impressive five-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 24-1 record. Defending champion Toyota Alvark keeps the second place with eight games lost. Aishin Sea Horses are looking forward to face Hokkaido L. (#3) in Saporro in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Toyota Alvark will play on the road against the league's second-placed Wakayama T. and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
