Regular Season Round 12: Le Mans - Pau-Lacq-Orthez 73-71
Date: December 20, 2013
A very interesting game took place in Le Mans. It ended with only two-point defeat on the road of 11th ranked Pau-Lacq-Orthez (5-7) to sixth ranked Le Mans (8-4) 73-71 on Friday evening. Host team only slightly avoided a big embarassment. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Pau-Lacq-Orthez. Pau-Lacq-Orthez was ahead by 1 point at the halftime before a 23-16 third quarter run of Le Mans. They made 16-of-21 charity shots (76.2 percent) during the game. Strangely Pau-Lacq-Orthez outrebounded Le Mans 34-21 including a 13-2 advantage in offensive rebounds. The winners were led by Brazilian power forward Joao Paulo Batista (205-81, college: Gonzaga) who scored that evening 15 points (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field) and swingman Pape Sy (200-88) supported him with 15 points. Four Le Mans players scored in double figures. Even 23 points (went 9 for 9 at the free throw line !!!) by American forward Ahmad Nivins (206-87, college: St.Joseph's) did not help to save the game for Pau-Lacq-Orthez. Naturalized Mali forward Bandja Sy (204-90, college: N.Mexico St.) added 18 points and 6 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Le Mans moved-up to third place, which they share with 3 other teams. Newly promoted Pau-Lacq-Orthez dropped to the tenth position with seven games lost. Le Mans' next round opponent will be bottom-ranked STB Le Havre (#16) on the road which should be an easy win for them. Pau-Lacq-Orthez will play against Olympique Antibes (#15) and hope to win that game.
