Regular Season Round 18: Shanxi Zh. - TianJin S. 125-105

Bottom-ranked Shanxi Zhongyu managed to get the third consecutive victory on Friday night. This time they outleveled tenth-ranked TianJin Steel in Taiyuan 125-105. It's especially surprising that the victory came too easily and 20-point difference suggests that Shanxi Zhongyu is in a good shape to leave the bottom place. The game was mostly controlled by Shanxi Zhongyu. TianJin Steel managed to win fourth quarter 33-31. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Shanxi Zhongyu shot 62.3 percent from the field and made 18-of-18 free shots (100 percent !!!) during the game. Shanxi Zhongyu had a 29-17 advantage in offensive rebounds. The best player for the winners was American swingman Marcus Williams (200-86, college: Arizona, agency: Interperformances) who scored 42 points (!!!), 5 rebounds, 7 assists and 5 steals (went 8 for 8 at the free throw line). The other American import forward Charles Gaines (201-81, college: S.Mississippi) chipped in a double-double by scoring 26 points and 17 rebounds. Five Shanxi Zhongyu players scored in double figures. At the other side the best for losing team was American point guard Sebastian Telfair (183-85) who recorded 32 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 steals and forward Nan Zhang (197-81) added 27 points and 6 rebounds (went 7 for 7 at the free throw line) respectively. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Shanxi Zhongyu have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to sixteenth place, which they share with Bayi R. Loser TianJin Steel dropped to the ninth position with nine games lost. They share it with Liaoning H. and Fujian QB. Shanxi Zhongyu will meet higher ranked Beijing Ducks (#3) on the road in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. TianJin Steel will have a break next round.
