Regular Season Round 11: Kings - Breakers 83-99

There was an upset when 4th placed Kings (5-7) lost to eighth ranked New Zealand Breakers (5-9) in Sydney 83-99 on Sunday. Kings were trailing by 1 point at halftime but managed to get 2-point lead after three quarters before a 36-18 charge of New Zealand Breakers, which allowed them to win the game. They also forced 21 Kings turnovers. Strangely Kings outrebounded New Zealand Breakers 46-23 including a 19-6 advantage in offensive rebounds. Kings were plagued by 30 personal fouls down the stretch. American power forward Gary Wilkinson (204-82, college: Utah St.) orchestrated the victory by scoring 31 points and 6 rebounds. His fellow American import point guard Kerron Johnson (185-90, college: Belmont) contributed with 21 points for the winners. International swingman Ben Madgen (193-85, college: Augusta St.) answered with 26 points and 5 assists and American swingman Sam Young (198-85, college: Pittsburgh) added 21 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists in the effort for Kings. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Kings' coach Shane Heal rotated ten players seeing no chance for a win. Defending champion moved-up to sixth place. Kings lost third consecutive game. They keep the fourth position with seven games lost. New Zealand Breakers will face league's second-placed Adelaide 36ers in Findon in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Kings will play at home against Cairns Taipans and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
