Top ranked Halcones Rojos (23-6) recorded its sixth loss in Cancun on Thursday night. Visitors were defeated by second ranked Pioneros (22-7) 88-70. It ended at the same time the 13-game winning streak of Halcones Rojos. It may be a crucial game in the contest for the top position in the league. The game was mostly controlled by Pioneros. Halcones Rojos managed to win second period 20-17. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded Halcones Rojos 42-25 including a 31-17 advantage in defensive rebounds. The former international forward Hector Hernandez (206-85, college: Fresno St.) fired a double-double by scoring 30 points and 11 rebounds for the winners. Panamanian power forward Jose Lloreda (203-80, college: LSU, agency: Paris Global Sports) chipped in a double-double by scoring 14 points and 14 rebounds (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). Four Pioneros players scored in double figures. American-Puerto Rican forward Renaldo Balkman (201-84, college: S.Carolina) produced 22 points and Puerto Rican point guard Carlos Rivera (187-83, college: Hofstra, agency: Paris Global Sports) added 14 points and 5 rebounds respectively for lost side. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Pioneros maintains second place with 22-7 record behind leader Halc.Rojos. Halcones Rojos at the other side still keep top position with six games lost. Pioneros are again looking forward to face league's leader Halcones Rojos in Veracruz in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Halcones Rojos will have a break next round.
