Regular Season Round 14: Cape Breton - UPEI 67-65
Date: January 10, 2014
A very interesting game took place in Sydney. It ended with only two-point defeat on the road of 3rd ranked Panthers (4-5) to second ranked Cape Breton (5-3) 67-65 on Friday evening. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 14-9. But Panthers won second period 20-17. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Cape Breton dominated down low during the game scoring 54 of its points in the paint compared to Panthers' 30. Cape Breton forced 19 Panthers turnovers. Power forward Alison Keough (186-95) notched a double-double by scoring 23 points and 15 rebounds to lead the effort and American point guard Tanira McClurkin (165) supported her with 17 points and 6 assists. Even a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds by guard Amy Gough (178) did not help to save the game for Panthers. point guard Danielle Macdonald (165) added 21 points for the guests. Panthers' coach tried various players' combinations and tested in total twelve players in this game, but that didn't help. Cape Breton maintains second position with 5-3 record having five points less than leader UFV. Panthers lost fourth consecutive game. They dropped to the fourth place with five games lost. Cape Breton will have a break next round. Panthers will play on the road against the league's leader Huskies (#1) in Halifax, NS and hope to win that game.
