There was no surprise when 11th ranked Universo/Goiania (6-9) was defeated on the road by seventh ranked Sao Jose/Vinac (8-6) 82-75 on Monday. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Universo/Goiania won third quarter 19-18. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Sao Jose/Vinac won last quarter 22-17. Sao Jose/Vinac had a 30-19 advantage in offensive rebounds. Universo/Goiania was plagued by 24 personal fouls down the stretch. American-Dominican point guard Emmanuel Quezada (188-85, college: USF) fired 17 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. Alex Oliveira (194-83) chipped in 16 points (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field). Four Sao Jose/Vinac players scored in double figures. Guard Fernando Penna (189-83) produced 17 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists and Uruguayan forward Emilio Taboada (191-82) added 18 points respectively for lost side. Both coaches used bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Sao Jose/Vinac moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Uberlandia and Brasilia. Universo/Goiania lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the eleventh position with nine games lost. Sao Jose/Vinac will face Palmeiras (#9) in Sao Paulo in the next round. Universo/Goiania will play at home against Winner/Limeira and hope to win that game.
