Regular Season Round 17: Al Shamal - Al Jaysh 70-97

Date: January 18, 2014
Another exciting game was a derby match between two local teams from Doha: Al Jaysh (#2) and Al Shamal (#9). Al Shamal was crushed at home by 27 points 70-97 and even the advantage of their own court did not help. Al Jaysh outrebounded Al Shamal 56-36 including a 41-24 advantage in defensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 34 assists comparing to just 16 passes made by Al Shamal's players. The game was also dominated by American players. Guard Devan Downey (175-87, college: S.Carolina) stepped up with a triple-double by scoring 27 points, 13 rebounds and 14 assists for the winners and center Dwayne Jones (211-83, college: St.Joseph's) chipped in 12 points and 18 rebounds. Al Jaysh's coach Dragoslav Milovanovic felt very confident that he used 10 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Power forward Jonathan Huffman (213-86, college: Iona, agency: Gamble Sports Management) responded with a double-double by scoring 24 points and 10 rebounds and point guard Tommy Smith (182-90) produced a double-double by scoring 17 points and 13 rebounds. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. The victory was the sixth consecutive win for Al Jaysh. They maintain second place with 13-4 record having just two points less than leader Al Rayyan, which they share with Al Gharafa. Al Shamal lost their fifth game in a row. They dropped to the bottom position with 15 games lost. Al Jaysh will meet Al Wakrah (#7) on the road in the next round which should be theoretically another easy game. Al Shamal's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Doha Al Arabi.
