Eleventh-ranked Gigantes (9-22) used its home court advantage to challenge first ranked Halcones Rojos (28-7) in Toluca on Saturday. The visitors from Veracruz managed to secure only three-point victory 96-93. However their fans expected much easier game. The guests trailed by 3 points after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 5-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 96-93. Halcones Rojos dominated down low during the game scoring 78 of its points in the paint compared to Gigantes' 52. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 28 assists. It was a good game for American-Puerto Rican forward Renaldo Balkman (201-84, college: S.Carolina) who led his team to a victory with 21 points and 8 rebounds. Puerto Rican point guard Carlos Rivera (187-83, college: Hofstra, agency: Paris Global Sports) contributed with a double-double by scoring 10 points, 6 rebounds and 11 assists for the winners. Halcones Rojos' coach Oscar Castellanos used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. Naturalized American guard Justin Avalos (191-87, college: Western St.) replied with 16 points and 8 assists and American forward Jerome Habel (208-85, college: San Diego St.) added 17 points and 7 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) in the effort for Gigantes. Both teams had five players each who scored in double figures. Halcones Rojos maintains first position with 28-7 record. Gigantes at the other side keep the eleventh place with 22 games lost. Halcones Rojos are looking forward to face Halcones UV Xalapa (#8) on the road in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Gigantes will play against Gansos in Ciudad de Mexico and are hoping to prove to their fans that this time they can win.
