Regular Season Round 16: Niigata - JX Sunflowers 49-81

WJBL top team - JX Sunflowers (15-1) had no problems winning another game on Saturday. This time they crushed seventh ranked Niigata (6-10) in Tokyo 81-49. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Niigata. The game without a history. JX Sunflowers led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Niigata to just 7 points in second quarter. JX Sunflowers dominated down low during the game scoring 64 of its points in the paint compared to Niigata's 26. They outrebounded Niigata 42-29 including a 31-17 advantage in defensive rebounds. JX Sunflowers looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of the former international forward Yuka Mamiya (185-90) who helped to win the game recording 12 points and 9 rebounds. International forward Mikoto Onuma (174-93) contributed with 13 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. Four JX Sunflowers players scored in double figures. JX Sunflowers' coach Kiyomi Sato felt very confident using 11 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Forward Miya Maki (172-90) replied with 7 points and 6 rebounds and guard Seiko Kawakami (165-88) added 8 points and 4 assists in the effort for Niigata. JX Sunflowers have an impressive five-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains first position with 15-1 record. Niigata at the other side keeps the seventh place with ten games lost. JX Sunflowers are looking forward to face Ebara Vickies (#11) in Tokyo in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Niigata will play at home against Hitachi Cougars (#10) and is hoping to prove to their fans that the loss was just an accident.
