Eleventh-ranked Barese (8-10) used its home court advantage to challenge first ranked Agrigento (13-5) on Sunday. The visitors from Agrigento managed to secure only one-point victory 80-79. However their fans expected much easier game. The guests started the game with a very strong first quarter 22-13. But Barese won third quarter 21-19. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Agrigento well out of reach of Barese shooting 76.5 percent from the field and made 78-of-82 free shots (95.1 percent) during the game. Strangely Barese outrebounded Agrigento 100-70 including a 38-24 advantage in offensive rebounds. They shot the lights out from three sinking 36 long-distance shots on high 76.6 percentage. Agrigento looked well-organized offensively handing out 34 assists comparing to just 15 passes made by Barese's players. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Agrigento made 28 blocks. Forward Fabio Mian (196-92) notched 19 points and 5 rebounds to lead the effort and point guard Alessandro Piazza (174-87) supported him with 7 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists. Even 9 points and 13 rebounds by American power forward Ivan Elliott (203-86, college: UCSB) did not help to save the game for Barese. Naturalized American forward Ryan Amoroso (205-85, college: San Diego St.) added 11 points and 10 rebounds. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Agrigento have an impressive six-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 13-5 record. Newly promoted Barese dropped to the twelfth place with ten games lost. Agrigento will meet bottom-ranked Bari (#16) on the road in the next round which should be an easy win for them. Barese will play against the league's second-placed Naturhouse Ferrara (#2) and hope to secure a win.
