Not a big story in a game in Acapulco where 9th ranked Angeles (15-17) were defeated by fourth ranked Abejas (24-11) 101-97 on Thursday. Angeles trailed 55-52 at halftime, rallying from a 32-18 deficit at the end of first quarter to trim the gap. Abejas dominated down low during the game scoring 60 of its points in the paint compared to Angeles' 28. They outrebounded Angeles 44-33 including 33 on the defensive glass. Venezuelan Nestor Colmenares (203-87, college: Campbellsville) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 28 points and 14 rebounds for the winners and American forward Steffphon Pettigrew (195-89, college: W.Kentucky) chipped in 25 points and 6 rebounds. At the losing side American guard Marcus Elliott (191-84, college: Louisiana Tech) responded with 32 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists and point guard Luis Ramirez (180-82) scored 25 points (on 9-of-11 shooting from the field). Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Abejas maintains fourth place with 24-11 record. Newly promoted Angeles keep the ninth position with 17 games lost. Abejas will face bottom-ranked Gansos (#14) in Ciudad de Mexico in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Angeles will play at home against Gigantes (#11) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
