Not a big story in a game when bottom-ranked Thunderbirds (0-17) were outscored by third ranked Golden Gaels (10-7) in Sault Ste. Marie, ON 66-21 on Friday. The game without a history. Golden Gaels led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Thunderbirds to just 2 points in second quarter and to 9 points in first half. Golden Gaels held Thunderbirds to an opponent 16.3 percent shooting from the field compared to 36.6 percent accuracy of the winners. Golden Gaels forced 32 Thunderbirds turnovers and outrebounded them 43-27 including a 22-9 advantage in offensive rebounds. Power forward Robyn Pearson (183) orchestrated the victory by scoring 14 points and 7 rebounds. Guard Emily Hazlett (168) contributed with 9 points for the winners. Guard Karissa Kajorinne (170) answered with 4 points and 5 rebounds and point guard Sydney Resch (165) added 3 points and 5 rebounds in the effort for Thunderbirds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Golden Gaels maintains third place with 10-7 record having just -11 point less than leader Windsor, which they share with TRU and McMaster. Thunderbirds lost their fifteenth game in a row. They still close the standings with 17 games lost. Golden Gaels will face Voyageurs (#7) in Greater Sudbury in the next round. Thunderbirds will play on the road against York in Toronto and hope to get finally their first victory.
