Ninth-ranked Mogi (9-12) was very close to win a game against second ranked Pinheiros (14-5) in Sao Paolo on Thursday. Pinheiros managed to secure only two-point victory 84-82. However their fans expected much easier game. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Mogi won fourth quarter 25-17. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Pinheiros forced 23 Mogi turnovers. 26 personal fouls committed by Mogi helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Naturalized American Shamell Stallworth (195-80, college: USF, agency: Interperformances) orchestrated the victory by scoring 22 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. American point guard Joe Smith (192-77, college: Al.-Huntsville) contributed with 20 points and 7 assists for the winners. The former international forward Marcus Vinicius Toledo (203-86) answered with 18 points and 8 rebounds and center Daniel Castellar (202-83) added 18 points and 9 rebounds in the effort for Mogi. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Pinheiros have a solid series of three victories in a row. They maintain second place with 14-5 record having nine points less than leader Flamengo. Mogi at the other side dropped to the tenth position with 12 games lost. They share it with Palmeiras. Pinheiros are looking forward to face SKY/Basquete (#8) in Aldeota in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Mogi will play on the road against Palmeiras in Sao Paulo and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
