Regular Season Round 16: Valur - IR 79-90

Date: February 7, 2014
Another interesting game was a derby match between two teams from Reykjavik: IR (#9) and Valur (#12). Valur was defeated at home 79-90 and even the fact of playing on their own court did not help. The game was mostly controlled by IR. Valur was better in third quarter 28-27. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. IR forced 20 Valur turnovers. Strangely Valur outrebounded IR 49-23 including a 19-5 advantage in offensive rebounds. The winners were led by point guard Matthias Sigurdarson (185-94, college: Flagler) who scored that evening 24 points and 8 assists and American swingman Nigel Moore (195-81, college: Alabama A&M) supported him with 14 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals. Five IR players scored in double figures. Even a double-double of 31 points and 17 rebounds by American forward Chris Woods (195-89, college: Pfeiffer) did not help to save the game for Valur. Center Birgir Petursson (205-86) added 25 points and 12 rebounds (on 12-of-15 shooting from the field) for lost side. Valur's coach Agust Bjorgvinsson rotated eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. IR (6-10) moved-up to eighth place, which they share with Snaefell. Valur lost ninth consecutive game. Newly promoted team stay at the bottom position with 15 games lost. IR's next round opponent will be Snaefell (#9) in Stykkisholmur. Valur will play on the road against Thor Thorl in Thorlakshofn and hope to win that game.
