There was no surprise when 7th ranked Sydney Uni Flames (9-14) lost at home to fourth ranked Townsville Fire (15-8) 87-71 on Friday. The guests trailed by 11 points at the halftime before their 51-24 charge in the second half, which allowed them to win the game. Townsville Fire outrebounded Sydney Uni Flames 41-29 including a 27-16 advantage in defensive rebounds. It was a good game for the former international center Suzy Batkovic-Brown (195-80) who led her team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 31 points and 17 rebounds (went 9 for 9 at the free throw line !!!). New Zealand guard Micaela Cocks (174-86, college: Oregon) contributed with 18 points and 5 assists for the winners. Four Townsville Fire players scored in double figures. Townsville Fire's coach Chris Lucas allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Guard Katie-Rae Ebzery (177-90) replied with 28 points and 7 assists (went 8 for 8 at the free throw line) and American forward Lasondra Barrett (187-90, college: LSU) added 13 points and 5 rebounds in the effort for Sydney Uni Flames. Townsville Fire have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to third place. Loser Sydney Uni Flames dropped to the sixth position with 14 games lost. Townsville Fire will face Bulleen Boomers (#4) in Melbourne in the next round. Sydney Uni Flames will play at home against West Coast Waves and hope to win that game.
