Regular Season Round 27: Lakehead - Laurier 74-47
Date: February 8, 2014
Very important is a road loss of third ranked Laurier (15-5) against sixth ranked Thunderwolves (10-10) on Saturday night. Visiting Laurier was crushed by Thunderwolves in Thunder Bay 74-47. The game without a history. Thunderwolves led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Laurier to just 4 points in second quarter and to 13 points in first half. Thunderwolves dominated down low during the game scoring 56 of its points in the paint compared to Laurier's 32. They outrebounded Laurier 44-28 including a 29-15 advantage in defensive rebounds. It was a great evening for American guard Jylisa Williams (173-89, college: Georgia St.) who led her team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 21 points, 21 rebounds and 5 assists. Her fellow American import forward Essa Jacobsen (182-92, college: Mesabi Range) helped adding 16 points and 5 rebounds (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). The best for the losing side was guard Laura Doyle (170) with 13 points and center Whitney Ellenor (190-91, college: Canisius) scored 10 points. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Thunderwolves moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Winnipeg. Loser Laurier dropped to the second position with five games lost. Thunderwolves will have a break next round. Laurier will play on the road against McMaster in Hamilton and hope to win that game.
