Regular Season Round 14: Oviedo - Cortegada 55-50

There was an upset when higher ranked Cortegada (7-7) was defeated on the road by tenth ranked Oviedo (6-8) 55-50 on Saturday. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Cortegada won fourth quarter 18-13. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Oviedo forced 24 Cortegada turnovers and outrebounded them 42-31 including a 17-5 advantage in offensive rebounds. Cortegada was plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. The best player for the winners was Cameroonian forward Florence Avebe (185-88, college: Massachusetts) who had a double-double by scoring 17 points and 20 rebounds. Naturalized Argentinian Ines Orselli (-93) chipped in 15 points and 4 assists. Guard Montserrat Gilabert (172-80) produced 15 points and 4 assists and Senegalese center Mame Coumba Sy (-95) added 4 points and 12 rebounds respectively for the guests. Oviedo have a solid four-game winning streak. They moved-up to seventh place in Group A, which they share with Cafe Barco and Aros Leon. Loser Cortegada dropped to the fifth position with seven games lost. Oviedo will face higher ranked Real Celta Vigo (#6) on the road in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Cortegada will play against the league's second-placed Universitario de Ferrol and will have a slim chance for a victory.
