There was no surprise when 6th ranked Ironi Nes-Ziona (10-9) was defeated on the road by third ranked Maccabi Haifa (13-6) 92-83. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Ironi Nes-Ziona won third quarter 19-15. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Maccabi Haifa won last quarter 32-24. They made 25-of-29 charity shots (86.2 percent) during the game. Maccabi Haifa forced 22 Ironi Nes-Ziona turnovers. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 25 assists. 24 personal fouls committed by Ironi Nes-Ziona helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. It was an exceptional evening for American-Venezuelan Donta Smith (200-83, college: SE Illinois JC) who led the winners and scored 18 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists. American forward Brian Randle (203-85) accounted for 16 points and 10 rebounds for the winning side. Maccabi Haifa's coach Danny Franco allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. American forward Tyler Honeycutt (203-90, college: UCLA) came up with 24 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists (on 10-of-11 shooting from the field) and the other American import forward Mitchell Watt (208-89, college: Buffalo) added 16 points and 5 rebounds (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field) respectively for Ironi Nes-Ziona in the defeat. Five Maccabi Haifa and four Ironi Nes-Ziona players scored in double figures. The victory was the fifth consecutive win for Maccabi Haifa. Defending champion maintains third place with 13-6 record having just three points less than leader Hapoel J-M. Newly promoted Ironi Nes-Ziona dropped to the fifth position with nine games lost. Maccabi Haifa's next round opponent will be Galil Gilboa (#8) in Rosh Pina which should be theoretically an easy game. Ironi Nes-Ziona will play at home against Maccabi Ashdod and hope to win that game.
