There was a surprise result when sixth ranked 66ers (15-20) beat top-ranked Rio Grande Valley Vipers (24-10) in Hidalgo 142-125 on Saturday. The guests trailed by 1 point at the halftime before their 74-56 charge in the second half, which allowed them to win the game. 66ers dominated down low during the game scoring 96 of its points in the paint compared to Rio Grande Valley Vipers' 38. 66ers forced 19 Rio Grande Valley Vipers turnovers and had a 39-28 advantage in offensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 29 assists. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when 66ers made 10 blocks. Rio Grande Valley Vipers were plagued by 28 personal fouls down the stretch. It was a very good performance for guard Mustafa Shakur (190-84, college: Arizona) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 22 points, 5 rebounds and 10 assists. Forward Rodney Bartholomew (203-88, college: Indiana Tech) contributed with a double-double by scoring 24 points and 10 rebounds (on 10-of-12 shooting from the field) for the winners. 66ers' coach used an eleven-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Forward Robert Covington (206-90, college: Tennessee St.) replied with a double-double by scoring 45 points (!!!) and 11 rebounds and guard Troy Daniels (193-91, college: VCU) added 21 points and 4 assists in the effort for Rio Grande Valley Vipers. Five 66ers and four Rio Grande Valley Vipers players scored in double figures. 66ers have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to fourth place. Loser Rio Grande Valley Vipers still keep top position with ten games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.
