Regular Season Round 6: Gaiteros - Bucaneros 81-80

A very interesting game took place in Maracaibo. It ended with only one-point defeat on the road of 7th ranked Bucaneros (3-5) to ninth ranked Gaiteros (3-5) 81-80 in the fight for the eighth place. The hosts were ahead by 2 points but lost the second period ending it with a 5-point deficit before their 29-23 run, which allowed them to win the game. Gaiteros outrebounded Bucaneros 37-21 including 17 on the offensive glass. American point guard Ryan McCoy (183-87, college: La-Lafayette) notched 24 points and 4 assists to lead the effort and the other American import forward LaVell Blanchard (201-81, college: Michigan) supported him with 17 points and 8 rebounds. Gaiteros' coach Flor Melendez allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. Even a double-double of 36 points (!!!) and 10 rebounds by Spanish-Dominican forward Edward Santana (203-80) did not help to save the game for Bucaneros. The former international swingman Carlos Cedeno (193-85, college: Frank Phillips JC) added 10 points and 6 assists. Gaiteros moved-up to eighth place, which they share with defeated Bucaneros. Gaiteros' next round opponent will be league's second-placed Marinos in Puerto La Cruz and they do not belong to the favorites in that game.
