Regular Season Round 22: Ilysiakos - Aris 51-63

There was no surprise when 14th ranked Ilysiakos (5-17) lost to ninth ranked Aris (9-13) in Athens 51-63 on Saturday. Ilysiakos was trailing by 11 points at halftime but managed to get 1-point lead after three quarters before a 20-7 charge of Aris, which allowed them to win the game. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Ilysiakos to just 7 points in fourth quarter. Aris held Ilysiakos to an opponent 24.3 percent shooting from the field compared to 39.3 percent accuracy of the winners. They outrebounded Ilysiakos 53-37 including a 44-26 advantage in defensive rebounds. It was a very good performance for the former international forward Michalis Pelekanos (198-81) who helped to win the game recording 17 points and 5 rebounds. Cypriot-Bulgarian Aleksandar Vezenkov (203-95, college: Xavier) contributed with 8 points and 12 rebounds for the winners. Forward Stelios Ioannou (196-87) replied with 14 points and 8 rebounds and the former international guard Panagiotis Kafkis (197-80) added 14 points in the effort for Ilysiakos. Aris moved-up to seventh place, which they share with 3 other teams. Ilysiakos lost sixth consecutive game. They stay at the bottom position with 17 games lost. Aris will face Panelefsiniakos (#12) in Eleusina in the next round where they are favorite. Ilysiakos will play at home against Ikaros and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
