Regular Season Round 18: Gaiteros - Gigantes 76-70

There was a minor upset in Maracaibo where 8th ranked Gigantes (11-15) were defeated by eighth ranked Gaiteros (11-13) 76-70 on Saturday. Gigantes were trailing by 6 points at halftime but managed to get 1-point lead after three quarters before a 17-10 charge of Gaiteros, which allowed them to win the game. They made 25-of-27 free shots (92.6 percent) during the game. Gigantes were plagued by 24 personal fouls down the stretch. The best player for the winners was American point guard Ryan McCoy (183-87, college: La-Lafayette, agency: Haylett Sports) who scored 24 points and 7 assists. Dominican swingman Victor Liz (188-88) chipped in 17 points and 6 rebounds. At the other side the best for losing team was the former international guard Michael Flores (192-85) who recorded 17 points and 5 rebounds and international forward Axiers Sucre (199-78) added 13 points and 6 rebounds respectively. Four Gigantes players scored in double figures. Gigantes' coach Carl Herrera tested eleven players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Gaiteros moved-up to seventh place. Gigantes lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the eighth position with 15 games lost. Gaiteros will face Bucaneros (#9) in La Guaira in the next round. Gigantes will play on the road against Toros in Maracay and hope to win that game.
