There was a surprise result when seventh ranked Sendai 89ers (22-22) outplayed at home top-ranked Akita Happinets (36-10) 112-91 on Sunday. The game was mostly controlled by Sendai 89ers. Akita Happinets was better in fourth quarter 27-25. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Sendai 89ers looked well-organized offensively handing out 26 assists. American players dominated the game. Forward DeAngelo Casto (203-90, college: Washington St.) orchestrated the victory with a triple-double by scoring 21 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists. Guard Wendell Wendell (198-84, college: UNLV) contributed with 27 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. Sendai 89ers' coach Shuto Kawachi felt very confident that he used 11 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Forward Ruben Boykin (201-85, college: N.Arizona) replied with a double-double by scoring 15 points and 17 rebounds and forward Deshawn Stephens (203-89, college: San Diego St.) added 21 points and 9 rebounds (on 9-of-11 shooting from the field) in the effort for Akita Happinets. Five Sendai 89ers and four Akita Happinets players scored in double figures. Sendai 89ers maintains seventh position with 22-22 record. Loser Akita Happinets still keep top place with ten games lost. Sendai 89ers will face Tokyo Cinq R. (#10) on the road in the next round. Akita Happinets will play against Iwate Big Bulls (#3) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
