Fifth-ranked Hitachi Sunrockers (18-31) made lots of trouble for first ranked Toshiba Thunders (41-7) in Tokyo on Friday. The visitors from Kanagawa managed to secure only one-point victory 63-62. However their fans expected much easier game. Toshiba Thunders forced 75 Hitachi Sunrockers turnovers and outrebounded them 76-64 including a 35-24 advantage in offensive rebounds. Toshiba Thunders looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Toshiba Thunders made 20 blocks. It was a great evening for American forward Nick Fazekas (211-85, college: Nevada) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 18 points and 22 rebounds. Senegalese swingman Mamadou Diouf (197-77, college: Delaware) helped adding 9 points and 11 rebounds. At the losing side the former international power forward Joji Takeuchi (207-85, agency: N.E.T.) responded with a double-double by scoring 14 points, 18 rebounds and 4 blocks and American power forward Jamar Smith (206-80, college: Maryland) produced a double-double by scoring 19 points and 15 rebounds. Four Hitachi Sunrockers players scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Toshiba Thunders maintains first place with 41-7 record. Hitachi Sunrockers lost third consecutive game. They keep the fifth position with 31 games lost. Toshiba Thunders will meet at home Hokkaido L. (#3) in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Hitachi Sunrockers will play against Tochigi Brex and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
