Regular Season Round 29: Aalstar - Liege 87-81

There was a minor upset when 3rd placed Liege Basket (19-9) was defeated on the road by fifth ranked Okapi Aalstar (17-12) 87-81 on Saturday. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Liege Basket won third quarter 20-13. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Okapi Aalstar won last quarter 28-24. They made 25-of-28 free shots (89.3 percent) during the game, while Liege Basket only scored six points from the stripe. Liege Basket was plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. The best player for the winners was American Derek Raivio (190-84, college: Gonzaga) who scored 26 points (was perfect 12-for-12 from the free throw line !!!). Naturalized American forward Ian Hanavan (202-80, college: Evansville, agency: Interperformances) chipped in 19 points. International power forward Ioann Iarochevitch (207-89) produced a double-double by scoring 12 points and 11 rebounds and American center Kenneth Simms (205-86, college: Cumberland, agency: Two Points) added 15 points and 6 rebounds respectively for the guests. Five Liege Basket players scored in double figures. Okapi Aalstar maintains fifth place with 17-12 record. Loser Liege Basket keeps the third position with nine games lost. Okapi Aalstar will face Leuven Bears (#7) at home in the next round. Liege Basket will play against the league's second-placed Belfius Mons-Hainaut (#2) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
