Regular Season Round 31: Laboral Kutxa - Gipuzkoa 66-72

We should mention about the upset which took place in Vitoria, where higher ranked Laboral Kutxa (16-15) lost at home to tenth ranked Gipuzkoa (15-16) 66-72. The guests started the game with a very strong first quarter 21-7. But Laboral Kutxa won third quarter 21-12. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Gipuzkoa dominated on the defensive end, holding Laboral Kutxa to just 7 points in first quarter. They outrebounded Laboral Kutxa 62-49 including 19 on the offensive glass. Laboral Kutxa was plagued by 40 personal fouls down the stretch. Worth to mention a great performance of point guard Javier Salgado (18-80) who helped to win the game recording 20 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. American-Irish swingman Will Hanley (201-90, college: Bowdoin, agency: Duran International) contributed with 17 points and 9 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) for the winners. French guard Thomas Heurtel (188-89) answered with 18 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists and international swingman Fernando San Emeterio (198-84) added 13 points and 5 rebounds in the effort for Laboral Kutxa. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Laboral Kutxa's coach Sergio Scariolo rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Gipuzkoa have a solid series of three victories in a row. They moved-up to ninth place, which they share with FIATC Joventut. Laboral Kutxa at the other side dropped to the eighth position with 15 games lost. Gipuzkoa will play against higher ranked G.Canaria 2014 (#5) in Las Palmas in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Laboral Kutxa will play at home against Blusens Monbus and hopes to get back on the winning track.
