There was a small surprise when fifth ranked Caballeros de Culiacan (16-16) won against at home 3rd ranked Frayles de Guasave (20-12) 85-76 on Saturday. The hosts started the game with a very strong first quarter 23-14. But Frayles de Guasave won second period 19-15. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Caballeros de Culiacan dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to Frayles de Guasave's 36. Caballeros de Culiacan looked well-organized offensively handing out 26 assists comparing to just 11 passes made by Frayles de Guasave's players. It was a good game for American swingman Rene Rougeau (198-86, college: UNLV) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 28 points, 13 rebounds and 4 assists. The other American import Benjamin Puckett (205-83, college: Clayton St., agency: I.D.S. Law) contributed with a double-double by scoring 25 points and 10 rebounds for the winners. American forward John Millsap (198-82, college: UTSA) replied with 26 points and 8 rebounds (went 7 for 7 at the free throw line) and the former international forward Alonso Izaguirre (200-76) added 17 points and 6 rebounds in the effort for Frayles de Guasave. Newly promoted Caballeros de Culiacan maintains fifth position with 16-16 record. Loser Frayles de Guasave keeps the third place with 12 games lost.
