Regular Season Round 1: United - Taipans 61-89

The most crucial game of the last round was a loss of United (0-1) in Melbourne on Sunday night. Hosts were rolled over by Cairns Taipans (2-0) 89-61. The guests trailed by 1 point after first quarter, but they stormed back to get the 13-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 89-61. Cairns Taipans dominated down low during the game scoring 50 of its points in the paint compared to United's 20 and made 18-of-23 free shots (78.3 percent) during the game. American guard Scottie Wilbekin (188-92, college: Florida) stepped up and scored 27 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners and the former international power forward Alexander Loughton (206-83, college: ODU) chipped in 17 points (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field). Five Cairns Taipans players scored in double figures. At the losing side the former international forward Mark Worthington (203-83, college: Metro St.) responded with a double-double by scoring 15 points and 11 rebounds and American guard Jordan McRae (198-91, college: Tennessee) scored 17 points. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Cairns Taipans are looking forward to face Wollongong Hawks in Gwynneville in the next round. United will play again on the road against Cairns Taipans and is hoping to prove to their supporters that the loss was just an accident.
