Regular Season Round 8: Pioneros - Gansos 100-84

Rather predictable result in Cancun where seventh ranked Pioneros (5-3) defeated 11th ranked Gansos (2-5) 100-84 on Saturday. The game was mostly controlled by Pioneros. Gansos was better in fourth quarter 23-16. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Pioneros dominated down low during the game scoring 54 of its points in the paint compared to Gansos' 34 and made 25-of-28 free shots (89.3 percent) during the game. They outrebounded Gansos 45-28 including a 31-16 advantage in defensive rebounds. Pioneros looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Pioneros made 7 blocks. Gansos were plagued by 24 personal fouls down the stretch. Worth to mention a great performance of the former international swingman Romel Beck (201-82, college: UNLV, agency: Interperformances) who helped to win the game recording 25 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists (on 8-of-9 shooting from the field) and American-Puerto Rican point guard Denis Clemente (183-86, college: Kansas St.) who added 17 points and 7 assists during the contest. Four Pioneros players scored in double figures. Pioneros' coach Manuel Cintron used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American swingman Brandon Davis (198-88, college: Lamar, agency: Elite Talent Exchange) responded with 31 points and 5 rebounds and his fellow American import guard Harrison Smith (190-87, college: Texas Southern) scored 21 points and 8 rebounds. Pioneros moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Huracanes and Halc.Xalapa. Loser Gansos dropped to the twelfth position with five games lost. Pioneros will face Abejas (#10) in Guanajuato in the next round where they are favorite. Gansos will play on the road against the league's second-placed Soles in Mexicali and hope to win that game.
