Important game to mention about took place in Gwynneville. Cairns Taipans (4-0) saved a 2-point victory on the road edging Wollongong Hawks (1-3) 91-89 on Sunday evening. Guest team only slightly avoided a big embarassment. It looked good early as Wollongong Hawks took an 2-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Cairns Taipans had a 22-18 second period charge getting the lead and Wollongong Hawks were not able to take back game control losing it eventually 89-91. Strangely Wollongong Hawks outrebounded Cairns Taipans 36-24 including 23 on the defensive glass. The former international power forward Cameron Tragardh (209-83, college: ORU) orchestrated the victory by scoring 13 points and 6 rebounds. International guard Cameron Gliddon (196-89, college: Concordia Irvine) contributed with 10 points and 6 assists for the winners. Five Cairns Taipans players scored in double figures. Cairns Taipans' coach Aaron Fearne allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. American point guard Gary Ervin (183-83, college: Arkansas) replied with 21 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists and his fellow American import point guard Jahii Carson (178-92, college: Arizona St.) added 24 points (was perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line) in the effort for Wollongong Hawks. Cairns Taipans will play against New Zealand Breakers in Auckland in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Wollongong Hawks will play at home against New Zealand Breakers to get more than just one victory in their record.
