A very close game took place in Nes Ziyona between Ironi Nes-Ziona and Maccabi Ashdod. Ironi Nes-Ziona (2-1) got a very close home victory over Maccabi Ashdod (0-3). Ironi Nes-Ziona managed to escape with a 1-point win 82-81 on Monday evening. Host team only slightly avoided a big embarassment. Maccabi Ashdod cut a 14-point halftime deficit to one at the end of the game. Ironi Nes-Ziona looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. It was an exceptional evening for American guard Preston Knowles (187-89, college: Louisville) who led the winners and scored 16 points and 5 assists. His fellow American import forward Craig Smith (201-83, college: Boston Coll.) accounted for 18 points and 5 rebounds for the winning side. U.S. Virgin Islands-Puerto Rican forward Ivan Aska (200-90, college: Murray St.) came up with 20 points and 8 rebounds and American-Puerto Rican swingman Edwin Ubiles (198-86, college: Siena) added 14 points respectively for Maccabi Ashdod in the defeat. Four Maccabi Ashdod players scored in double figures. Ironi Nes-Ziona will meet Maccabi Rishon in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Maccabi Ashdod will play against Hapoel Holon and hopes to get finally their first victory.
